Back to School Sleep Tips

August 18th, 2010 admin No comments

Another interesting and important posting from the National Sleep Foundation site.

Most kids sleep later during the summer vacation.  Remember to start getting them on their school sleep schedule early since it takes a few weeks to get it set.  The article recommends two weeks for best results.  There are other good recomendations in the article also.

Cherry Juice could affect your Insomnia

July 21st, 2010 admin No comments

I just read this interesting article on the positive effects of tart cherry juice for better sleep.  As someone who has been using tart cherry juice for some time, I can say that it really works.  I like to drink the juice straight.  I happen to like the tart flavor.  I have heard of people mixing it with other drinks.  Just be careful that you don’t mix it with something too sweet as that might keep you awake.

Good luck and sweet dreams!

hdr-tech

We have talked about various forms of light pollution and how they effect your sleep before.  Now this interesting post “Trouble sleeping? Maybe it’s your iPad” on CNN.com.  The light you are exposed to, especially right before bedtime, can greatly impact your wake/sleep cycle and therefore your ability to get to sleep.

Exposure to green light can reset the body’s internal clock and alter sleep-related hormonal responses.

May 23rd, 2010 admin No comments

We found this article about an interesting study that indicates that Green light can be used to reset the body’s internal clock.  We have known about how Blue light can reset the body’s clock for some time now we can add Green to the list of light colors for treating Circadian Rhythm disorders.  The study was done at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and was reported in the May 12 issue of Science Translational Medicine.

We have a product called the Bright Light Hat Visor that uses Blue and Green lights mixed together to reset the body’s clock.  It can be used to treat SAD, Jet Lag and other forms of Circadian Rhythm disorders.

Marsona DS-600A The Everything for Everybody Sound Machine

May 12th, 2010 admin No comments

The Marsona DS-600A is the most complete Sound Machine we sell.

Marsona ds-600a Sound Machine

Marsona ds-600a Sound Machine

I had a room mate in college that had trouble sleeping.  He could only sleep when he turned on an old-fashioned window box fan.  He needed the fan to drown out all the other noise of our college dorm.  Seemed like a perfectly logical idea to me.  But both of us would always wake up with dry eyes.  I have always enjoyed sleeping on rainy days.  The sound of the rain puts me to sleep almost instantly.  So I was very interested in the idea of a sound machine.  If you have trouble sleeping, you can choose from several different kinds of sounds.  You can even pick plain white noise, if you are one of those window box fan people.

The Marsona DS-600A is our top of the line Sound Machine.  It has the greatest selection of different sounds available.  Now you can enjoy the Surf as it meets the sand of the beach, a calm, gentle rain with the rhythm of a distant thunderstorm, or the steady, constant background of “White Sound”.  Relax to the sounds of a babbling Brook, the gentle lapping water at the Lakeshore, or the sounds of crickets and spring peepers on a Country Eve.  The sounds on the Marsona DS-600A are the favorite and most requested sounds based on years of Marsona customer feedback.

It is also completely portable.  It uses 4 AA batteries, so it is great for those who travel and have trouble sleeping.  You can even use it in the car or unfamiliar bedroom to help babies and small children fall asleep.  An international model is even available for those running on 240v current.

Set the timer and it will even shut itself off after 60 minutes.

It is the perfect thing for those who need to sleep in an environment where there are distracting noises that keep you from falling asleep.  Forget about the noisy neighbor or that pesky garbage truck.  Also great for those who suffer from tinnitus, the soft gentle waves or rain sounds will drown out the ringing in your ears.

The Marsona DS-600A Sound Machine will help those who have trouble sleeping to sleep better.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for Trouble Sleeping

April 28th, 2010 admin No comments

If you or someone you know is having trouble sleeping, you may be interested in this article on Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).  We found this on the Mayo Clinic site, one of our favorites.  “Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has emerged as a treatment for insomnia that’s an effective alternative to sleeping pills, even for people with severe or chronic sleep problems”.  Nothing against sleeping pills, many people use them effectively.  But they simply don’t work for everyone and there are people who cannot or will not use them.  So it is always good to have options.  “How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?  Cognitive behavioral therapy helps you change the thoughts and actions that interfere with your ability to get restful sleep”.  Or put another way, working with a “trained sleep therapy specialist” using Biofeedback, Relaxation Training and Stimulus Control among other things to change your behavior and mindset to better enable sleep.  You can find a Sleep Therapy Specialist through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

“Young people are so horrifically sleep-deprived.”

April 22nd, 2010 admin No comments

This Article appeared on Mercury News.com out in Silicon Valley CA.  “When teens hit puberty, their internal circadian clocks wind forward 1 to 3 hours, meaning they need 9 hours of sleep on average, a couple more hours than their younger siblings”.  As the parent of a pair of active teenagers, I can attest to the difficulty of getting them to bed at a reasonable hour.  After school, sports and homework there is so little time left.  Some days it is a struggle to get it all done and get them to bed before 10pm.  But the more we know about sleep, the more we learn that it is critical to their overall health and well being.

Early to Bed: A Cure for Teen Depression?

January 28th, 2010 admin No comments

sleep_logo

Interesting finding by the National Sleep Foundation. They found that adolescents with earlier bedtimes were less likely to suffer from depression and thoughts of suicide. We all know that it is difficult to make sure our teens get enough sleep. But it seems that the stakes are a bit higher than we have have previously thought.  There is also a great page of questions and answers on their “ask the expert page” regarding teens and sleep.

Another article here about high school kids getting less sleep.  And links through this page to other info on teens and sleep.

This site is a wonderful resource for sleep info.
